A week after papers were signed, Berlin experienced some of the worst rains I can remember. Water poured through all three floors, and a long night of trying to lessen the damage proved futile. When the deluges were over, the wool carpets, flooring and ceilings were a total loss. The first projects were new roofs and the enormous clean up of the damage. |

I made alot of amazing discoveries exploring this 10,000+ square foot building. The second floor had been used as a factory, originally for manufacturing furs, later for cleaning and repair of furs. One vault contained racks of pelts. Another vault, with a massive steel door provided storage for furs. The room to the right is the main room that one saw upon entering the second floor from the main stairwell. "Modernized" for use as a sewing and repair area, it has presented the toughest challenges, as the drop ceiling houses a confusing array of vents and wiring. Original windows are drywalled over and a more "modern" window installed. It is now referred to as the "Karate Room", serving as a workout room and Eastern retreat. |

To the right of the main room is a large room used to house the fur cleaning machines which were mounted on rails on the floor. One can only imagine how warm this room could get as it was directly vented off of the furnace room. This room was quickly emptied and put into use as a temporary living space and bedroom while the basic renovation was going on, as it is over 800 square feet. It also housed my studio while the gallery was open. |

The third floor with its bricked up windows and antique wiring had not seen the light of day since the 1950s. I explored the maze of narrow hallways and tiny rooms with a flashlight. But when the electricians strung temporary lights and flipped the switch, what an amazing discovery! Shown after the removal of ancient wallpaper, countless rooms with lofty ceilings, some with hardwood, encircle a courtyard topped by a skylight. Today, this space is part of my bedroom. ONWARD |
